The image of Mother Scholastica for today’s world is like a great mosaic which has acquired its form and meaning through the placement of each tiny piece.  Her story is gradually coming to light, thanks to the research done by some of the sisters in the Secretariat for Spirituality. They are striving to communicate “the memories of the past” in order to explore our present reality and build toward the future.

The motto for the life of Mother Scholastica can be found in a phrase which issued from the depths of her heart and in the fullness of her youth as she refused an offer for an engagement to be married: “LORD, YOU ALONE ARE ENOUGH FOR ME”.

Her entire spiritual journey is a great fulfillment of her heart’s desire.  It seems to me that it would be beneficial to consider the important dates in the life of Mother Scolastica, since her experience of God is made incarnate through her life story, in her acceptance to be rendered fruitful by the love of God, in order that others may find life. 

Orsola Maria was born in Guarene (Cuneo) on July 12, 1897, the firstborn of Antonio Rivata and Lucia Alessandria.  She was baptized the following day in the church of Saints Peter and Bartholomew.  The Rivata family was also blessed with the birth of three other children: Giuseppina, Clotilde and little Giacomo, whom the Lord soon called to himself.
