A Pearl from Milan

Sr. M. Amata Antonini

Anita Carla Antonini, born on October 13, 1923, in Leggiuno, Italy, emerged from the vibrant backdrop of Milan, a city steeped in history and culture. Her journey unfolded against the tapestry of World War II, where a personal tragedy redirected the course of her life.

Anita’s initial aspirations for a traditional married life were shattered when her fiancé, called for military service, perished in the war. Stricken with grief, Anita turned to the divine for guidance, leading her to discern a higher calling. On July 16, 1945, under the protective gaze of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, she entered the convent of the Sister Disciples of the Divine Master in Alba.

Her entrance marked a period of turmoil for the congregation, facing the challenges of the ‘death of the Institute.’ Despite the uncertainties, Anita, now Sr. M. Amata, embraced her vocation wholeheartedly. The congregation received diocesan approval in 1947, and on April 4, 1948, Sr. M. Amata made her religious profession. A life devoted to the Divine Master culminated in her perpetual profession on April 4, 1953.

Pioneer, Formator, and Leader:

Sr. M. Amata’s dedication and conviction paved the way for her roles as a formator and leader. From 1950 to 1957, she guided young women in their formative years in Alba and later in Rome. Her firm yet loving approach left an indelible mark. Pioneering the establishment of a community and Liturgical Apostolate Centre in Genoa, she showcased her leadership abilities.

In 1961, responding to a missionary call, Sr. M. Amata ventured to Mumbai. Her arrival injected new energy into the PDDM Foundation in India. Gifted with intelligence, wisdom, and creativity, she embraced her responsibilities, fostering growth and expansion across the country.

A Guide to Our Destiny:

Sr. M. Amata’s arrival marked the inception of the novitiate in Mumbai, ushering in a period of increased apostolic activities. Her profound faith and trust in God, coupled with a deep prayer life, guided her through challenges. Her collaboration with major superiors and adherence to the congregation’s spirit propelled its progress.

A Contented Soul:

Known for her simplicity and detachment from material possessions, Sr. M. Amata practiced poverty diligently. Her trust in Divine Providence and resourcefulness manifested in creative endeavors, such as sewing baby dresses to generate income for the congregation. Her contentment and humility set an example for all.

A Woman of Perfection:

Sr. M. Amata’s role as a teacher and perfectionist influenced those under her guidance. Her discernment in identifying hidden talents enabled her to direct sisters effectively in their apostolate. A memorable incident showcased her unique approach, turning a moment of upset into a lesson in forgiveness and rectification.

A Guiding Star:

Gifted with extraordinary sensitivity, Sr. M. Amata connected deeply with others. Sisters under her leadership fondly remember her as a spiritual mother, standing by them in moments of doubt and struggle. Her life exemplified authentic discipleship.

Radiant with God’s Love:

Sr. M. Amata, as a Novice Mistress, embodied love, care, and faith. Her endearing smile reflected her deep intimacy with the Divine. Her unwavering faith, humility, and ability to face challenges inspired those around her. Novices shared poignant experiences, highlighting her commitment, visionary spirit, and emphasis on ‘little ways’ to sanctity.

A Life Well-Lived:

Sr. M. Amata’s journey in India spanned various roles from 1961 to 1993, encompassing postulant mistress, novice mistress, local superior, regional superior, regional councillor, and regional secretary. Returning to Italy in 1993, she continued serving until 2006, offering her skills as a receptionist at the General House. Despite subsequent transfers, she remained dedicated to the apostolate through prayer and suffering.

Her final journey commenced on July 29, 2021, a date coinciding with the liturgical memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Sr. M. Amata’s legacy endures as a noble soul, a pioneer who tirelessly contributed to the growth of the Indian province. Grateful hearts salute her dedication and commitment to the divine service.
